What is the API engine oil classification system?

The familiar API Service Symbol, often called the “donut”, can show the service category, SAE viscosity grade and resource-conserving information where applicable. The API Certification Marks are used on qualifying oils intended for specified gasoline-engine applications.
API S categories for gasoline engines
API categories beginning with S are used for spark-ignition engines. New categories are introduced to address developments such as turbocharging, gasoline direct injection, timing-chain wear, deposits, oxidation and fuel economy.
API SP is a current gasoline-engine category designed to provide protection against issues including low-speed pre-ignition and timing-chain wear, while also addressing deposits and oxidation.
